Game Review: Round 21

Points Shared In Physical Encounter

The Oakleigh Cannons again experienced a very physical game against the Cavaliers at Jack Edwards Reserve in Oakleigh.

This time we saw no goals but many heavy clashes between these two spirited teams.

The game unfortunately developed into an unfashionable display by the Cavaliers. Green Gully itself received several yellow cards and the Oakleigh players too were cautioned.

The Cavaliers controlled the game in the first half and were unfortunate on several occasions not to have opened their scoring line.

Their first real attempt on goal was only after three minutes when from a corner kick, an unmarked Green Gully player was left alone at the far goal post. His header rebounded off the crossbar and back into a scramble of players within the goal area.

Fortunately for the Cannons, they cleared the ball and restored control.

Late in the first half the Cannons started to penetrate the Green Gully backline but they shots on goal were wide off the mark.

The Cavaliers showed creativity and solid physical football but did not bother the score board attendant in the first half; neither did the Cannons.

At half time there were no goals to speak of but there was plenty to talk about some of the tackles that players were exhibiting on the park.

To Oakleigh’s credit, they continued with their positive attacking style of play.

The second half continued in the same manner as the first half.

The game was played hard, fast and physical with neither team giving a centimetre of space or time on the ball.

Oakleigh needed some good change of fortune to get into the game.

The Cannons came close to scoring when the ball was cleared from the goal area after it had struck the crossbar from a wonderful attempt on goal.

Within minutes, there was another scramble in the Green Gully goal area and the Cavaliers were lucky this time to clear the ball off their own goal line after it had beaten the Cavaliers goal keeper.

Frustration too was starting to become quite evident by the Cavaliers players after missed opportunities and there were several melees that required attention on the park by the referrer and his assistants.

Even though the Oakleigh Cannons only gained a point, the team showed good character and willingness not to succumb to the physical tackles exerted by the Cavaliers.

The Cannons now need to start concentrating on their next game against the Melbourne Knights who are currently sitting on top off the ladder and are in sizzling form.
